SAM: THE CAT WITHOUT A TAIL

Sam: The Cat Without a Tail is a children’s picture book. Sam, the central character, is a Manx cat, and so, sports a soft puff of white fur instead of a tail. This is Sam’s story, his discovery that he is, indeed, different than most cats, his heartbreak over this discovery, and finally, how he resolves these feelings.

More than ever, we need if not an understanding, then certainly a tolerance for diversity. Parents reading this story with their children can use this it as a springboard to talk about how people come in all shapes, sizes and colors, yet each is wonderful and “right” in their own way.

SAM: THE CAT WITHOUT A TAIL

"Gloria Lintermans has written a wonderful and sweet book, Sam: The Cat Without A Tail, that is engaging and easy for children to relate.  Through the use of an animal, Gloria makes the parallel to children, in a safe and comfortable way, and how they feel different, and different is not always a good thing for our children.  Sam is an adorable and friendly Manx (a special breed of cat that never have a tail) who comes to realize that he is different from the other cats he is meeting. Although this is the way he has always known himself, he begins to take to heart the other cats’ comments about not having a tail.  It takes one person to point out how special Sam is and he quickly gains her confidence back.

"As a clinical psychologist, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will make it a part of my collection of books to read to children in my practice. It will promote conversation between therapist and child about feeling different, being teased, and ultimately self acceptance for one’s uniqueness.

"This book is a short and sweet way of initiating conversation with a child who is anxious and insecure for whatever reason – real or perceived. Looking forward to reading this book often."

"The meaning of being special is to be distinguished, or different from what is common or ordinary. To be extraordinary! Sam was different from the other pets in his neighborhood because he didn't have a tail. That difference made him feel he was lacking what everyone else had, and that made him sad. But, one day they discovered it wasn't that he was lacking at all. He was a rare kind of cat, unlike any other, and that didn't make him just different, it made him special.! This story shows that we all have basic structures that identify us in common ways, but these common traits should never define who we are."

Sam: The Cat Without A Tail follows the trials of Sam, a young Manx cat with a soft, white puff of a tail. As he discovers that he is indeed different from everyone around him, he learns and helps to teach the importance and beauty of diversity and self-worth. An original, entertaining, and thoroughly 'kid friendly' picture book specifically written for children ages 3 to 7 by Gloria Lintermans, and charmingly illustrated by Kristina Tosic, "Sam: The Cat Without A Tail" is particularly and especially recommended for family, daycare center, preschool, elementary school, and community library collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that "Sam: The Cat Without A Tail" is also available in a digital book format (Kindle, $9.99).

Sam: The Cat Without A Tail
 by Gloria Lintermans
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wonderful illustrations, quite colorful and attention keeping!

The story moves quickly and with the interactions among the cats, it lightly delves into the realm of self-esteem and how others can make one feel unwanted because of differences. The story also touches on how differences makes you unique and suited for different achievements.

Really good story for discussing these complicated issues with young ones. I can't wait to read it to my grandchildren.

I also like how Gloria subtly points out using our skills to do for others helps put self-esteem in the proper perspective.

I read the eBook version and it works very well as an eBook read.

The author gave me this book, and my voluntary review is above.

Sam: The Cat Without a Tail is a children’s picture book written by Gloria Lintermans and illustrated by Kristina Tasic. Alex was thrilled when his mom came home one day with a kitten for him. He fell in love with the little face that peeked out at him from the cardboard box that the kitten had come home in. Alex named his kitten Sam and showed him to his big brother, Richard. Richard laughed at Sam’s fuzzy little tail, which was more of a stub than what Richard considered a real tail. Sam knew that Alex liked him, even if Richard laughed and called him Stubby. But it was when Sam began to get to know the other cats in the neighborhood that he realized that his tail was different from theirs -- and that he was different as well. He began to hide in the house more and tried to avoid being seen by other cats. When he hid in the pantry, the door closed on him, and he was locked in the dark until Alex came looking for him. Sam got more and more unhappy and scared until Aunt Marsha came to visit. Then things suddenly turned out just fine. Lintermans includes an appendix on the Manx cat as well as Information for Parents and Caregivers on the development of self-worth in children.

Gloria Lintermans’s children’s picture book, Sam: The Cat Without a Tail, is a story that will resonate with any child who feels different from or not as good, fast or smart as his/her peers or siblings. As Sam finds, having things in common with others makes it a lot easier to become one of the group and to feel the self-worth needed to interact in a positive way with others. Lintermans’s little kitten is indeed special with skills of his own that save the day, as, indeed, each child is unique and special. The author’s message is so inspirational because it challenges kids to find out what makes them special, and it alerts parents, caregivers and teachers to watch for signs that indicate that a child is unhappy or feeling different. She also does a great job of introducing Manx cats to her audience, a special and rare breed most recognizable by their stubby or non-existent tails. Kristina Tasic’s illustrations are marvelous! They’re brightly colored and work perfectly with the storyline, especially her inspired cat drawings. Sam: The Cat Without a Tail is most highly recommended.
